This version is built so a kid can do most of the work. The mixing and dipping are all hands-on-deck fun; a grown-up just handles the hot pan. Everything in it is probably already in your kitchen — no special bread, no trip to the store.

Ingredients

  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Exract
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 pinch Nutmeg
  • 1 pinch Salt
  • 4 slices Bread prefer brioche
  • 1 tbsp Butter (for pan) more as needed for the pan

Equipment

  • 1 Large pan / skillet / griddle
  • 1 Whisk / fork
  • 1 Shallow bowl or pie plate (for dipping)
  • 1 Spatula

Method

  1. Mix the egg dip In a shallow bowl, crack the eggs and add the milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon (if using), and a pinch of salt. Whisk with a fork until it's all one color and a little frothy.
  2. Dip the bread Dip a slice of bread into the egg mix, count to two, flip it, and count to two again. Let the extra drip off. Don't soak it — a quick coat on both sides is all you need.
  3. Cook it Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the dipped slices and cook 2–3 minutes, until the bottom is golden. Flip with a wide spatula and cook 2–3 minutes more. Add more butter between batches. (Timer: ~3 minutes)
  4. Top and serve Stack the slices on plates. Add syrup, a dusting of powdered sugar, and berries if you like. Eat while it's warm.

Notes

  • Why medium heat? It lets the inside set before the outside browns. High heat = burnt outside, soggy middle.
  • Slightly stale bread works great and won’t fall apart — a good way to use up the end of a loaf.
  • Make it dairy-free: any plant milk works in place of regular milk.
  • Keeping it warm: hold finished slices on a rack in a 200°F oven while you cook the rest, so the whole batch is hot at once.
  • Grown-up steps: heating the pan and flipping the slices. Everything else is kid-friendly.
